Wow, Apple TV Take 2!

AppleĀ TV
Today Apple pushed out a huge software update for the Apple TV and after using it for awhile today, I have to say it’s like having a brand new device! The update has been called “Take 2″ because Apple, after admitting that they made some mistakes initially with the Apple TV set top box, has added several new features that make it a more compelling entertainment hub.

Among the new features:

  • Rent HD movies right from your TV
  • Buy movies, TV shows and music right from your TV
  • 1080p video upscaling
  • Airtunes functionality for streaming music or internet radio from your computer
  • Video and audio podcast directory and subscription from your TV
  • Flickr and Youtube favorites and subscriptions support
  • A new UI for everything
  • Tonight I rented one of the HD movies (Next) and was really impressed by the quality. It is higher quality than a DVD, but lower quality than Blu-Ray. There are a lot of people complaining that Apple only went as high as 720p (it upscales to 1080p but the source is not that high), but after watching the movie I can see why. The movie stopped several times so that the buffer could catch up – because I started watching it right after I rented it, it literally took the entire 2 hours for the download to complete. The movies are about 2GB, and if it were Blu-Ray quality it would be about 25GB…which would literally take an entire day of downloading. Of course it could also be worsened by the fact that I only have a G router, so maybe I’ll get an N router and see if that makes it a lot faster.

I also purchased an album, some songs and a TV episode to watch, and that all went smoothly. And while housekeeper was here I streamed some internet radio in the living room. So as you can tell I’ve been using this thing a lot today!

Some of my friends gave me an Apple Store gift certificate for my Birthday last year, and the Apple TV was what I purchased with it. I’m really glad I did because it’s been really fun playing around with it, especially since I don’t have cable (yeah I’m still on that kick, but weakening by the day). What’s really been taking up a lot of my time lately is watching video podcasts on it via Youtube. You thought Youtube was a time waster when you’re at your computer? Well, try it relaxing on your couch! I’ve literally spent hours and hours just watching wacky videos by browsing around with my remote.

Overall I’d recommend the Apple TV now that the device has matured a bit. It’s like having a video iPod AND your laptop in the living room, and it really makes me want to spend less time in front of the computer and more time in the living room relaxing a bit with my media. Up next? Video blogging!

    Why not?

    22 01 2008

Then again, maybe this is not how it ends…maybe this is just where it gets interesting…

So I’ve had a month off and I told myself that I would only return to blogging if I really felt like I needed it. Which is funny because I think that statement itself actually identifies the reason why I stopped blogging in the first place; because I saw it as a weakness.

I started blogging because I was emotional, confused and upset. I continued blogging because it was fun, although my blog’s self-described identity as a form of therapy continued to loom over me. So when I felt like I didn’t need the therapy any longer there was this idea that I didn’t need the blog, and that it’s continued use actually made it ineffective. However what I should have realized is that things can persist in our lives while serving changing purposes.

And that purpose materialized in a new lesson, easily summed up in two words:
    why not?

After I decided this afternoon to return to the blog, I started salivating at the idea of sinking my teeth into some new ideas and discussion. I missed this. And although I tried to keep myself busy with other evening activities, things just didn’t feel nearly the same, or as satisfying.

So I thought, why not go back to blogging since I enjoyed it so much? Well if you’re thinking it’s painfully obvious that we ought to do things we enjoy just for the sake of enjoying them, and you’re not sure why this is something I’ve only recently figured out…well, then you still don’t know me very well. :-)

So there you go…false alarm. The blog isn’t over yet. In fact, it’s just starting to get interesting. Settle in you guys, I’ve got a few more things to say!

    Alright, back to bitching…

    16 09 2007

I need to tell you all that my life is going great. You might think otherwise from reading about all my complaints, but that’s just the nature of blogging. I blog because this is my therapy. It “gets things off my chest.” There are countless things about my life that I love. Countless! But I do not feel compelled to write about all of them. I just know that they’re great, and they don’t bother me or nag at me to resolve my feelings about them.

There are, on the other hand, things that bother me and nag at me to resolve my feelings about them. And this blog, that you either love, hate, or love to hate, is what I’m currently using to do that. It is what it is. If I only talked about things that are going great with my life, this would be called bragging – not blogging. If I decide to set up a Jerry Timms Brag, I’ll let you know. :-)

This is also not the typical gay blog that is stuffed with images of naked models. That’s called soft core porn. Also not blogging.

That all being said, I’m gearing up for a fresh round of painful, critical, heart wrenching Jerry Timms style complaining.

And I feel great about it!

    I’m ready for a party!

    12 07 2007

There’s really no other way to put this: I’m ready for a party! More specifically, I’m thinking about San Diego Pride coming up next weekend, and the closing party with Rosabel. They did the closing party at the White Party in Palm Springs, and it was just absolutely amazing. I could swear that crack was coming out of those speakers.

This weekend, however, my parents are coming to town for a weekend visit and trip to the Grand Canyon. I’m really looking forward to it because I haven’t been able to spend very much time with them lately. Even during the holidays it seemed that everything was really focused around my sister and new nephew – which is expected and justified, it just feels like it’s been a really long time since any member of my family has really asked me how I’m doing or what I’ve been up to. So maybe this weekend I’ll get a chance to share some of that with them.

Actually very few people ever ask me those type of questions, and I guess that’s the whole reason for me starting this blog. If nobody is going to ask, then I will tell them – and the rest of the world, too! It’s quite satisfying, actually – for someone who has a lot to say to have this type of forum for saying it.

Which brings me to a discussion I had with Rich and Justin tonight about the unchartered social waters of blog association and disclosure. Rich has decided to include a little more description in his blog about his personal life, and not everyone is as comfortable with those details as he is – or being associated so closely with stories that they would not choose to be a part of. In the end he will decide what to do about this, and I will be interested to see how the whole thing plays out. Unchartered waters…I mean how many people used to publish their diaries and distribute the copies to thousands of people every week? This is all new.
